Most of the vines involved are old and/or from mountainous sites. 535 metres up the sheer slopes of the Simonsberg clings a triangular block of Blanc grape varieties with fantastic elemental exposure, low yields, tight bunches of fruit that are ripe but mineral. The grapes are hand-picked at night.
Mon Vieux ‘Old Dutch’ Chenin Blanc
Delicate, earthy perfume of acacia honey with textured rich old-vine fruit and balancing minerality, this hugely appealing Chenin has the elegance, length and veracity of a wine simply fermented from the finest fruit. With understated poise but real presence, it merits decanting and will develop a more honeyed character as it ages. A bottled drop of time and place, hand-made in South Africa.
